Miller Condemns UN Security Council's Moment of Silence for Iranian President Raisi

Washington, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Carol Miller (R-WV) introduced a resolution that condemns the United Nations Security Council for holding a moment of silence for late Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi. The action taken by the United Nations disregards the purpose and principles mentioned in the United Nations Charter.

“I am dismayed by the United Nations Security Council’s actions to have a moment of silence for Iranian President Raisi. Any person given the nickname ‘Butcher of Tehran’ who is responsible for so many horrific deaths and committed such heinous deeds does not deserve any form of honor. We must hold the United Nations accountable for this shameless response and tacit support for Hamas’ horrors in Israel and Gaza,” said Congresswoman Miller.
 
Congresswoman Miller was joined by Reps. Guy Reschenthaler (R-PA), Bill Huizenga (R-MI), Andy Biggs (R-AZ), Brian Babin (R-TX), Tim Burchett (R-TN), and Claudia Tenney (R-NY).

Background: 

• The United Nations states in Article 1 of their charter that their purpose is to “achieve international co-operation in solving international problems of an economic, social, cultural, or humanitarian character, and in promoting and encouraging respect for human rights and for fundamental freedoms for all without distinction as to race, sex, language or religion.”
• In 1988, between 2,500 and 20,000 civilians were mass executed under Iranian President Raisi’s ruling, earning him the nickname “Butcher of Tehran”. 
• Raisi oversaw the mass political arrests and executions in 2022 following the death of Mahsa Amini, a woman detained over her allegedly loose headscarf. 
• Human rights lawyers have surmised that Raisi has been responsible for the death of tens of thousands of people over the last few decades.
