ICYMI: Miller's Op-Ed: Congress Working to Deliver Tax Cuts
WASHINGTON, D.C. - Congresswoman Carol Miller (R-WV) penned an op-ed in the Charleston Gazette on how the Tax Relief for American Families and Workers Act will stimulate the U.S. economy and benefit West Virginians.
Charleston Gazette-Mail: Carol Miller: Congress working to deliver tax cuts
"When President Trump’s Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) became law in 2017, West Virginia received tax cuts that we hadn’t experienced in decades. Finally, the federal government was working for the American people.
Fast forward to 2024 and the House Republican Majority is working to make your tax cuts and their economic benefits permanent. Our goal is to have the entire TCJA cemented into law, and we’re just getting started by passing the Tax Relief for American Families and Workers Act. This bill is the first step in enshrining these tax cuts into law and will help everyone in West Virginia and across the country. However, these policies could end if we don’t act now.
Writing good tax policy that serves every American without the special interests siphoning off the benefits is no easy feat, but it is crucial to produce policies. The Tax Relief for American Families and Workers Act is the first of many bills we hope to pass to make sure the tax code works for West Virginians.
The first Ways and Means hearing of the 118th Congress was in Petersburg, West Virginia. This set the tone for the committee and set the framework of the tax package. It would ultimately pass the House of Representatives with the support of 357 members of Congress. Because of the various testimonies from a small business owner, a veteran, a coal miner, and a mother of three, Congress is well on its way to providing Americans with a fairer tax code and concentrated benefits.
Right now, Washington D.C. is divided between a Republican-led House of Representatives and a Democratic-led Senate and White House. It’s no secret that Republicans and Democrats have different views on how the government should be run, but in the Tax Relief for American Families and Workers Act, we agree: American families deserve lower taxes and a government that work for them.
Another important way this bill supports West Virginia is through the child tax credit. This bill incentivizes parents to work hard to support their families and applies to households of all sizes so every child can be taken care of. Republicans know that families have been hit hard by the Biden Administration’s inflationary policies, so we adjusted the $2,000 child tax credit for inflation starting as soon as the bill is signed into law. In West Virginia alone, this would help 36,000 children.
The Tax Relief for American Families and Workers Act helps eliminate fraud and waste by cutting off funding for a COVID-era spending program. While many have been back to work for years, others have taken advantage of the support of the federal government. This has resulted in billions of dollars in fraud. That ends once the Tax Relief for American Families and Workers Act is passed into law.
Passing a bipartisan bill that helps Americans is incredibly rare in a divided government and is something I’m honored to have worked on. This legislation is the first step to addressing the inflation Americans have been experiencing. Because of this bill, our economy will be strengthened, and billions of taxpayers’ dollars will stay in the pockets of the American people and not the federal government.
The House of Representatives did their job, now it’s up to the Senate to pass the Tax Relief for American Families and Workers Act and send it to President Biden’s desk to be signed into law. I strongly urge my colleagues in the Senate to pass this bill that benefits every West Virginian. There is no time to waste."
