Miller, Mooney Introduce Bill to Rename the Clarksburg Federal Courthouse in Honor of Judge Irene Keeley

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Carol Miller (R-WV) and Congressman Alex Mooney (R-WV) introduced legislation that will rename the Clarksburg Federal Courthouse as the “Irene M. Keeley United States Courthouse". President George H.W. Bush appointed Irene Keeley as the first woman judge for the U.S. District Court of the Northern District of West Virginia. Judge Keeley has served in this position for over 30 years.
 
Senators Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV) and Joe Manchin (D-WV) introduced companion legislation in the Senate.

“Judge Keely has been a trailblazer for West Virginia. As the first woman appointed to be a judge for the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of West Virginia, she set an incredible example for future leaders across the state. I can think of no better way to honor her than by dedicating the Clarksburg Federal Courthouse in her name. I thank Judge Keely for her decades of service to our state and know that her legacy will inspire the generations to come,” said Congresswoman Miller.

As a mother, educator, and first woman judge for the Northern District of West Virginia, Judge Keeley exemplifies hard work, perseverance, fairness, and dedication to justice. I am proud to introduce this bill to rename the Clarksburg Federal Courthouse in her honor. Judge Keeley’s service will continue to inspire West Virginians,”  said Congressman Mooney.
 
Background:

  • Judge Irene M. Keeley graduated from the West Virginia College of Law with a law degree in 1980 and was confirmed with unanimous consent by the U.S. Senate on August 11, 1992.
  • Judge Keeley served as the district’s court Chief Judge from March 2001 to March 2008.
