On the devastating impact of the fentanyl crisis on West Virginia:
I’ve said this before and I will say it again, President Biden’s border policies are not working.
I taught my children that when you do something wrong, you do not blame others for your mistakes, but instead own up to them and fix it. Joe Biden needs to do the same thing. There’s too much at stake.
While we geographically aren’t a border state, West Virginia has felt the effects of the crisis at the border for years, especially regarding the fentanyl crisis. In 2023, 1,398 overdose deaths were reported in West Virginia. Imagine how many weren’t reported. 70% of which were opioids and synthetic opioids, primarily fentanyl.
West Virginia has long struggled with the devastating effects of the opioid epidemic. After years of positive progress, the crisis exploded due to the unprecedented lockdowns of the COVID-19 pandemic and the steady flow of drugs coming from the Southern border.
Last month, Customs and Border Patrol seized 1,846 pounds of fentanyl coming across the Southwest border—enough to kill 400 million people.
We all know someone who has been personally affected by the fentanyl crisis. It is unacceptable that young people are dying as a result of bad border policy.
Everyone knows someone who is suffering from addiction. They can be in the line in the grocery store when you’re checking out. They can be sitting at the pew next to you in church and you don’t know that they’re suffering. We all know families that have been directly affected.
The Biden Administration doesn’t seem to care about how our young people are dying from this border problem. This angers and quite frankly astounds me. House Republicans passed the HALT Fentanyl Act to stop the flow of fentanyl into our communities and combat its shipment across the border.
The whole country knows this is a problem, and Republicans brought forward a solution to fix it. There is no time to play games and pass the blame around when it comes to the safety of Americans.
