Miller Speaks on Supporting Pregnant and Parenting Women and Families Act

January 11, 2024

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, Congresswoman Carol Miller (R-WV) spoke at a Ways and Means Committee markup of the Supporting Pregnant and Parenting Women and Families Act. This bill provides maternal services critical to the health of the mother and unborn child. It will also stop the Department of Health and Human Services from placing restrictions on states to use Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) funds on Pregnancy Resource Centers.

As a woman, mother, and grandmother, it was deeply fulfilling to watch my children and grandchildren grow up healthy and happy. I am in awe of the miracle of conception and passionate about the sanctity of life. It is our role to support women and families as they raise the next generation.

Being a mother is no easy task – especially if there is an unexpected pregnancy. Pregnancy Resource Centers fill a unique and specific need – to provide women and families with the support and wrap-around services needed to help raise a child. I have been able to visit my own local Pregnancy Resource Center in Huntington, West Virginia – and the individual care they provide to parents is nothing short of a blessing.

Pregnancy Resource Centers go beyond offering counseling solely after a woman becomes pregnant. They deliver free services on a voluntary basis to expecting parents, ensuring that children can be cared for within their homes.

These comprehensive services include free pregnancy tests, ultrasounds, testing for sexually transmitted infections, counseling on all options for pregnancy, parenting education, job training, diapers and baby clothes, assistance with housing and utilities, and transportation support.

This bill affirms our support for women and families and will help ensure they are provided the resources they need.

I applaud Representatives Fischbach and Tenney for introducing this vital legislation and look forward to seeing it reported favorably out of committee today.
