Remarks as prepared below:

Good evening, ladies and gentlemen! I am excited to stand before you all today to begin this year’s U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree lighting ceremony!

Thank you to Speaker Johnson, all the hardworking volunteers, staff, the Richwood High School Band, and the architect of the Capitol who made this event possible.

Every year since 1967, families across the United States come together to decorate and gift a tree from their state to the U.S. Capitol, hence receiving the name, “The People’s Tree”.

As you know, this year’s tree is from my wild and wonderful state of West Virginia. But what you may not know is that the ornaments are made by children from all around the state.

The first capitol Christmas tree from West Virginia was in 1970, and then again in 1976 and now to today. As the second largest hardwood producer in the United States, it’s only fitting the Christmas Tree comes from West Virginia. I may be biased, but I think it’s the Capitol’s best tree yet!

This 63 foot, Norway Spruce was named wa’feem’tekw by the Shawnee tribe and means Bright Star which is a great representation of what West Virginia is to the rest of America.

From having an abundance of natural resources, to being our nation's energy powerhouse, West Virginia continues to amaze people with its beauty and history. It’s filled with hardworking, dedicated, and resilient people, but most importantly with people who value community and family above all else.

For my family, the Holiday season is our favorite time of the year. Gathering for different Christmas traditions and experiencing the joy and peace of the Christmas spirit is very dear to my heart.

As we celebrate the birth of our Lord and Savior, I wish you will take time to get together with your loved ones and acknowledge all the blessings you have received this year. May your hearts be filled with joy and peace and may you feel the love of friends and family surrounding you. Thank you for having me today, may God bless you all abundantly, and Merry Christmas!
