Rep. Miller Blasts EPA's Decision on NAAQS Rule for Fine Particulate Matter

February 7, 2024

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Congresswoman Carol Miller (R-WV) released the following statement responding to the Biden Administration’s finalized rule on National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) for fine particulate matter (PM2.5). The final update to the NAAQS will have devastating economic consequences for timber mills, manufacturers, and the American industry.

"The Biden administration continues to kill American jobs in the name of climate change. Updating the National Ambient Air Quality Standards for fine particulate matter (PM2.5) prematurely and without cause is a slap in the face to hard working Americans. I have previously invited EPA officials to visit West Virginia and drive on our roads and talk to the people who would be pushed to the brink of bankruptcy if this flawed policy were put into effect. By finalizing this rule, the Biden Administration has once again chosen to place burdens on America’s rural industries to appease climate radicals," said Congresswoman Miller.

Background:

  • Particulate matter is a type of dust that gets kicked up when you till a field or drive down an unpaved road, which happens every single day in rural areas and agricultural regions.
  • Recently, the EPA has moved to reconsider and tighten National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) for fine particulate matter reducing the current 12 μg/m3 to 9 μg/m3. The EPA has a statutory duty under the Clean Air Act to review the NAAQS, and in 2020 concluded that particulate matter standards are protective of public health and environmental qualities.
