Rep. Miller's Statement on the Biden Administration's Proposed Mining Reforms Report

September 15, 2023

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, Congresswoman Carol Miller (R-WV) released the following statement on the Department of the Interior’s (DOI) Interagency Working Group (IWG) proposals in the recently developed mining report that includes an 8% royalty rate, a failure to address permitting reform timelines, and the dirt tax. The proposed mining reforms undermine American energy independence, disrupt domestic energy production, and show yet another failure in the Biden administration's rush-to-green agenda.

“The United States has abundant resources that should be used to promote energy production and economic growth," said Congresswoman Miller. "Mining in other countries when we have the ability to mine cleaner and cheaper in the United States is a slap in the face to American workers. The IWG’s recommendations will slow domestic mining and force us to rely more on foreign adversarial nations for the minerals we use every single day. West Virginia is full of natural resources that can stimulate jobs, improve U.S. mining capacity, and ensure our domestic energy production.”

Background:

  • DOI report includes 60 recommendations by the IWG, with the primary goal of reforming the General Mining Act of 1872.
