Congresswoman Miller Announces $14,630,361 Grant to Fight Opioid Crisis

March 21, 2019

Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Miller (R-WV) announced today a grant of $14,630,361 from the Department of Health and Human Services to fight the opioid crisis in West Virginia. This grant will supplement the first-year funding of its State Opioid Response (SOR) program and expand access to medication-assisted treatment (MAT) that has proven successful.

Congresswoman Miller said, "This funding is critical in the fight against addiction. Southern West Virginia is ground zero for the opioid epidemic, and access to treatment and recovery is fundamental to prevent and reverse the impacts of this crisis. I thank President Trump for working tirelessly to bring more resources to save lives and provide solutions for all who are affected."

"One year ago this week, President Trump launched his national opioid initiative, which called for expanding access to compassionate, evidence-based treatment, including MAT. This week's funding awards to states were possible because of legislation Congress passed and President Trump signed since then," said HHS Secretary Alex Azar. "Our strategy is beginning to produce results, thanks to so many Americans working on the ground, in their own communities, to turn the tide on this crisis."

The goal of this funding is to provide MAT access using the three FDA approved medications for the treatment of opioid use disorder, reducing unmet treatment need, and reducing opioid-related deaths through prevention, treatment, and recovery activities for opioid use disorder.
